What have we learnt this term?

This term has been an exciting term for all students who love music.

Every Wednesday in Key Stage 1 and every Thursday in Key Stage 2, we've been joining in with singing assemblies. We choose our favourite pop songs and we use our best voices to sing them as a school. Favourites this term have been Myles Smith – Stargazing, Bruno Mars & Lady Gaga – Die with a Smile and Bruno Mars & Rose – APT.

In lessons, we have been learning a range of musical areas and skills:

EYFS – Exploring Sound

Year 1 – Keeping the Pulse (My Favourite Things)

Year 2 – Musical Me

Year 3 – Developing Singing Technique (Vikings)

Year 4 – Rock and Roll

Year 5 – South and West Africa

Year 6 – Pop Art

As well as our regular lessons, throughout the year, Year 1, Year 3 and Year 5 take part in Rocksteady. The children form a band, choose an instrument and a song and then work as a team to practice their song and perform it for parents. We hope to see you at a show soon!

Year 6 also join Mrs Pimm in brass lessons

Performances this year so far

What's been going on?

Performing in front of an audience and working as part of an ensemble is so important to a child's confidence and development. This term, all the children have worked so hard at bringing their best efforts to all of their performances.

YEAR 1

Year 1 and 2 worked hard on their Christmas performance, with some lovely singing and some wriggly dance moves. They delivered the Christmas spirit to everyone in attendance and it was lovely to see so many eager and brave children standing up to perform, act and sing.

Year 1 are also practicing for their Rocksteady concert, which will hopefully be happening after Easter. Even though Marc, our Rocksteady Champion, has been poorly, the children have worked amazingly with their new Rocksteady Champion, Josh, and are sounding incredible. We can’t wait to see them in action!

YEAR 3 AND YEAR 4

At the end of the spring term, Year 3 and 4 will be performing their play, 'The Lion King.' It will showcase some excellent talent, with fantastic singing and acting performances from everyone involved. I’ve heard their singing in the hall in preparation and they sound amazing!

Year 3 have also taken part in their Rocksteady concert just before Christmas. In groups of 9, they form a band, choose a band name, a song, the instruments they'd like to play and then they learn to play as a band! It was an incredible performance and every band played incredible sets. Our Year 6 After School Rocksteady Band, 'The Black Roses,' also played their newest song they've learned: ‘Sk8r Boi’ by Avril Lavigne. They paired this with ‘Song 2’ by Blur and blew everyone’s socks off.

BRASS LESSONS

Year 6 have been practicing their peripatetic lessons with Miss Pimm and are sounding very professional. Playing a brass instrument is really difficult, but every child has thrown themselves into it with 100% effort and have been practicing at home as well.

We can't wait to see what else the children have to offer next year. Fingers crossed, we should have performances from some external music groups coming in to perform for the children next year.

Be sure to check out the school's Facebook page, which has lots of pictures and videos of our amazing performances!

Going forward, our six Music Ambassadors will be continuing the blog and updating everybody on the musical adventures that we have within school. If you come to a concert, you can be sure that you'll be seeing our amazing ambassadors greeting people, organising chairs, introducing the bands and helping with preparations.
