Year 1 Phonics Screening Results

The national phonics screening test was introduced in 2012 to all Year 1 pupils.

It is a short, statutory assessment to confirm whether individual pupils have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. It aims to identify the children who need extra help so that they can be given support by school to improve their reading skills.

The check includes a ten page booklet with four words on each page. The check contains 40 words divided into two sections of 20 words. Each page will contain either four pseudo-words (Alien/made up words) or four real words.

There is no time limit for the check. The children can take as long as they need. The phonic checks that took place last year 10 minutes. For those children who can not concentrate for long periods, the check can be broken up into short periods.

If your child has not met the expected standard by the end of Year 1 then they will retake the test in the June of Year 2.

Please note - all statutory assessments were cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Government will not publish data for the 2021-22 academic year. It is therefore important to note that these results may no longer reflect current performance.
